One way of looking at a conference is as a community, gathering together at one location around the event programme. In the case of an annual conference, this community can develop over a period of years, gaining new members and shifting in focus. The use of socal media, in particular Twitter, makes these event communities more visible.

I’ve been looking for ways of mining Twitter for a while, and the session on social network analysis at the DREaM event 2 has given me some interesting avenues to explore – I’ve Storified the session below.

A DREaM online community has been created and the project is also running with the idea of a workshop cadre – no doubt they will be analysing themselves! Update, July 2012: the DREaM network revisited.

The other sessions at the event also look worthy of a closer look, in particular those on ethnography and discourse analysis, to give some ideas in relation to textual and sentiment analysis of backchannels. Thankfully the workshop was expertly amplified. Scan the CoveritLive archive for a flavour of discussions, including comments from 18 remote attendees or follow up individual sessions from the organisers’ review or the participants’ reviews. I found those by David Jarman and Paula Goodale particularly useful.

  2. Thanks Paula! I’m a bit of a Friendviz addict – I’ve been taking a few screenshots lately to get a better idea of the basics. Very interesting stuff.
